It is still too early to determine what ignited the fires in the Los Gallardos area. However, for a wildfire of this kind to occur and spread rapidly, three ingredients are typically required: an ignition source, dry vegetation that can act as fuel, and weather conditions that favour fires. Recent heatwaves across Europe have contributed to drying out vegetation, making fuels more flammable. In addition, the mountainous terrain of the region can accelerate fire spread, particularly uphill, while also making suppression efforts more challenging for firefighting crews. Because it is difficult to predict exactly when conditions will align for large wildfires, adaptation is our only way forward. That means investing in prevention, managing fuel, improving early warning systems, and ensuring people living in high-risk areas understand how to prepare and respond. As wildfire risk grows in many regions, building more fire-resilient communities will be one of the most effective ways to reduce future impacts.
