Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

No. Registered journalists are part of a database for internal use only. What we make available to the public is a space in which we have brought together the associations of science, environment and health journalists, both within and outside our borders.

Only if it is considered appropriate in the future, donations may be sought from organisations with an interest in scientific information: research organisations and centres, universities, science-based companies, publishers, professional and patient societies, the media, research funders and the government itself.

Its members are chosen for their expertise and professional background and will be needed when there are complex issues to be addressed that require expert advice. Its functions are:

  • Advising the SMC Spain team on issues that raise controversy and generate doubts as to the approach or how to address them.
  • Holding regular meetings to learn about the development of the project and to contribute their points of view.
  • Learning first-hand about new developments and the next phases of SMC Spain.
  • Proposing experts who can serve as sources for the contents if necessary.
  • Contributing to strengthening the relationship between research staff and the media.

What is basic is that they specialise in the subject on which they are going to provide information. We also take into account their research background and availability. Jacks of all trades or isolated voices are not valid to us: we seek representative points of view of the different opinions validated in each debate of the scientific community. Finally, we try to achieve a gender balance and specify the possible conflicts of interest of each source.

SMC Spain will cover topics that generate controversy on scientific issues and that require the knowledge and evidence of expert sources. In that sense, we work according to the embargoes of scientific journals and, if the news breaks in another way, we respond as quickly as possible.

Whenever social sciences are related to controversial issues, we will rely on social scientists as expert sources.

As for infographics, some resources do incorporate them and they can be used thanks to our Creative Commons licence. We are working so that we will soon be able to distribute both videos and audio clips.
