Results are presented from the unsuccessful first clinical trial that aimed to reduce cardiovascular risk by lowering lipoprotein(a) levels
The HORIZON trial was the first to evaluate the potential effect on cardiovascular risk of a drug—pelacarsen—that reduces lipoprotein(a) levels in the blood. While this approach had generated high expectations, it did not prove successful in this trial, which involved 8,000 patients who had already experienced cardiovascular events. The negative results, which Novartis previewed in a press release in September, are being presented in full on November 7 at the American Heart Association congress and are published in NEJM.
