Microplastics could be behind the change in the colour of the ocean in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The smallest microplastics — those less than 300 micrometres in diameter — are difficult to measure in the ocean, but their optical properties could make it possible to detect them from space. A study published in Communications Earth & Environment has analysed satellite data from 2002 to 2022 and observed that some areas of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch have become more bluish and greenish. Using simulations, the researchers have found that these changes are consistent with an increase in the concentration of microplastics in the water. The results suggest that the colour of the ocean could help detect this pollution from space, although direct measurements are needed to confirm the link.
