European cities are facing ever-increasing health risks arising from climate change, but adaptation measures are not keeping pace
Cities’ adaptation to climate change is not progressing fast enough to protect their inhabitants from increasing heatwaves, infectious diseases and exposure to pollen, which are having an ever-greater impact on the urban population. This is the main conclusion of a study published in The Lancet Public Health, based on 28 indicators from more than 850 European cities, including many in Spain such as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. The greatest improvements were observed in cities that increased their green space. The study also suggests that risks are rising more rapidly in southern and eastern Europe.

As regards the press release, I would say that, overall, it accurately reflects the main findings of the study. The only point worth clarifying is that the link between an increase in green spaces and a reduction in the urban heat island effect is an association and does not necessarily imply a causal relationship.
This research stands out for its scale, bringing together a broad international group of researchers and providing a comparative overview of nearly 900 European cities using 28 indicators relating to climate change and health. Taken as a whole, it offers a valuable database for understanding how these risks are evolving and the differences that exist between European regions.
As a main limitation, I would highlight that the set of indicators could be somewhat more comprehensive in terms of the climate risks considered, incorporating aspects such as floods and droughts. It would also be interesting to move towards more dynamic and accurate tools for monitoring these processes and supporting planning, including solutions such as geospatial artificial intelligence or digital twins. Although the report acknowledges the existence of conflicting effects or trade-offs, these could be integrated more systematically into the assessment of adaptation measures, as an action that is beneficial in addressing one risk may have unintended effects on other environmental or health aspects.
The findings are particularly relevant in the context of increasingly hot European summers. In such a context, urban tree cover can play an important role as infrastructure for creating climate refuges, but it will be essential to consider not only how much green space a city has, but also where it is located and which sections of the population benefit from it. The study provides a very useful basis for moving in this direction, particularly if, in the future, we are able to assess the effectiveness and distribution of the various adaptation measures more accurately.
In Spain, some of the most notable findings relate to Tarragona, Córdoba and Valladolid, which show the greatest increases in olive pollen levels amongst the cities analysed.
