Air pollution and metabolic risk factors drive global increase in strokes

The number of people who suffer a stroke, die from it or live with a subsequent disability has risen sharply worldwide between 1990 and 2021, according to a study published in The Lancet Neurology. The contribution of high temperatures to ill health and premature death from stroke has increased by 72% since 1990. For the first time, the study reveals the high contribution (on par with smoking) of particulate air pollution to subarachnoid haemorrhage (fatal brain haemorrhage).

Reaction: Study associates early menstruation with increased risk of diabetes and stroke in adulthood

An early first menstrual period (menarche) - compared with the average of 13 years - is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in women under the age of 65 and also with an increased risk of stroke among those living with diabetes, says a study published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health. The research analyses data from a national health survey in the US, focusing on women aged 20-65 between 1999 and 2018.

Reaction: Stroke could cause almost 10 million deaths a year by 2050, commission estimates

The Neurology Commission of the New World Stroke Organization and The Lancet has estimated that stroke deaths will increase from 6.6 million in 2020 to 9.7 million in 2050, with a widening gap between low- and middle-income and high-income countries. The economic analysis indicates that the treatment, rehabilitation and indirect costs of stroke would double from $891 billion in 2020 to as much as $2.3 trillion in 2050.

Reactions: exposure to pollution may increase stroke risk also in the short term

Chronic exposure to various air pollutants has been linked to an increased risk of stroke, but the short-term effects have been less well studied. A review of 110 papers and more than 18 million stroke cases shows that recent exposure - in the five days prior to stroke - also increases the likelihood of stroke. The results are published in the journal Neurology.
