A WHO report estimates that six climate measures could save more than a million lives and generate economic benefits

The widespread introduction of heatwave warning systems and a fiscal policy that sets prices for fossil fuels, amongst other measures, could save 1.6 million lives a year whilst generating trillions of dollars in economic and fiscal benefits, according to a new report by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The report, which sets out six measures on climate and health, is the first comprehensive analysis of the economic and fiscal benefits that would be gained by scaling up these strategies. “As governments prepare for the next round of climate negotiations – COP31, which begins on 9 November – health protection must be at the heart of climate action,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, in a press release.
