Reaction to the European Commission's proposal to tighten air and water pollution directives
Today the European Commission proposed revising the air and water quality directives in line with World Health Organisation recommendations. These would include more than halving the annual limit value for fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

The proposed pollution caps are not low enough to protect people's health, and the deadline is too far away (2030). Hundreds of thousands of people will die prematurely before these guidelines are fully implemented. We need to do more and act with greater urgency to protect the most vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women, children and the elderly.
