In 2024, some 2.3 million new cases of cancer worldwide were linked to infections — 12 per cent of all cases diagnosed that year — according to a study published in the journal The Lancet Oncology. Almost all of these cases are linked to five pathogens: the stomach bacterium Helicobacter pylori, the human papillomavirus (HPV), the hepatitis B and C viruses, and the Epstein-Barr virus. Low- and middle-income countries account for 77 per cent of all infection-related cancer cases.
According to the newspaper El País, the Catalan Regional Government has reported a case of swine flu —not swine fever, which is caused by another virus and does not affect humans— in an 83-year-old person in the province of Lleida. The newspaper points out that, as the patient had no contact with pigs that could transmit the virus, they may have been infected by another person.
Moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking at an average speed of 5 km/h for an additional five minutes per day, is associated with a 10% reduction in all-cause mortality among most adults, according to a study published in The Lancet. The research also found that reducing sedentary time by 30 minutes per day was associated with an estimated 7% reduction in all-cause mortality if adopted by most adults. The study analyzed data from more than 135,000 adults from Norway, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with an average follow-up of eight years.
