A more sustainable and less toxic form of paper used in tickets is being developed using wood derivatives

Thermal paper, designed for use with heat-sensitive inks and widely used for printing receipts, contains potentially toxic substances such as bisphenol A and S. Both are considered endocrine disruptors, as they have the ability to interfere with hormones. A new study published in Science Advances reveals a more sustainable and less toxic alternative based on wood derivatives. Specifically, they have surpassed bisphenol thermal coatings thanks to the plant derivatives lignin and D-xylose sugar derived from xylan (DFX).

International fish trade increases risk of PFAS exposure worldwide

Science journal has published a global map showing exposure to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through the consumption of fish products. PFAS are substances that are difficult to break down, meaning they can accumulate in the body, and some are linked to health problems. The authors collected data over 20 years from PFAS measurements in the marine environment and fisheries, and mapped the concentrations of these compounds in more than 200 species of marine fish. The study shows that international fish trade redistributes the risk of PFAS exposure from highly polluted regions to less exposed areas, with European trade playing a key role in increasing the risk of exposure to these substances.

Grandparents' exposure to environmental chemicals could influence their granddaughters' first menstruation

A team in the United States has analysed how exposure to environmental chemicals in previous generations influences the onset of the first menstruation. The researchers used data from the California Child Health and Development Study (CHDS) and analysed blood samples taken from 250 pairs from the 1960s. The results, presented at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in San Francisco (USA), show that although the average age of first menstruation remained stable between grandmothers and their daughters, it decreased by one year between daughters and granddaughters. Certain chemicals present in the blood of the mother and father were linked to the onset of puberty in their descendants, with stronger effects in granddaughters, according to the study, and with greater weight of male exposure.

Study estimates health and economic damages from exposure to harmful chemicals in plastics

In 2015, the human health impact of exposure to certain chemicals cost the equivalent of $1.5 trillion, says a study published in PNAS. The study estimates cases of ischaemic heart disease and stroke associated with bisphenol A (BPA) exposure; deaths of 55-64 year olds associated with di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure; and cognitive losses in children of mothers exposed to brominated flame retardants (PBDEs).

Prenatal exposure to a mixture of endocrine disruptors is associated with poorer metabolic health in childhood

A study conducted in Spain and five other European countries shows that exposure to mixtures of endocrine disruptors during pregnancy is associated with metabolic health problems in children. The research, published in JAMA Network Open, followed more than 1,100 mother-child pairs between 2003 and 2016 and found a correlation between measures of metabolic dysfunction in children aged 6-11 years, and their prenatal exposure to chemicals such as metals or organochlorine pesticides, among others. According to the authors, these results could be related to the current increase in metabolic syndrome across the lifespan, which results in an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Reactions: Study warns of PFAS contamination in global water systems

A "large fraction" of groundwater samples are contaminated by perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and would be considered unacceptable for drinking water, a study claims. The analysis, published by Nature Geoscience, brings together data from 273 studies of surface and groundwater samples from around the world since 2004. The exact proportion of samples exceeding the thresholds varies according to the standards considered. For example, 69% of groundwater samples with no known source of contamination exceed the Canadian threshold, but the figure is only 6% if the EU criterion for the sum of all PFASs is considered.

Reactions: study links heavy metals to ovarian ageing

Heavy metals - including arsenic, cadmium and mercury - may adversely affect the ovaries of women approaching menopause, a study claims. Those with high levels of metals in their urine had lower levels of anti-Müllerian hormone, indicating diminished ovarian reserve - fewer oocytes in the ovaries compared to other women of that age. The authors, whose study is published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, used urine data from more than 500 women in the US up to 10 years before their last menstrual period.

Reaction: Study in Belgium finds PFAS in straws, including paper and bamboo straws

A research team in Belgium found perfluoroalkylated and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) in drinking straws. The research, published in the journal Food Additives & Contaminants, analysed the presence of these persistent and potentially harmful compounds in 39 types of straws purchased from different shops, supermarkets or fast food chains. These substances were most prevalent in paper and bamboo straws, followed by plastic and glass straws. They were not detected in stainless steel straws.

US scientists have found perfluoroalkylated and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFASs) in sewage sludge from toilet paper waste. The research, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters, analysed the presence of these persistent and potentially harmful compounds in toilet paper rolls sold in North, South and Central America, Africa and Western Europe. These substances were compared with those detected in samples of sewage sludge from sewage treatment plants in the United States.
