Reactions to research warning of risk of more viral zoonoses due to climate change

Climate change will lead to at least 15,000 new cross-species virus transmissions by 2070, as habitat shifts on a 2°C warmer planet will bring previously distant animals closer together. This result, published in Nature, points to increased exposure of humans to pathogens from wild animals.

 

Reactions to the finding of new combinations of mutations, 'mutational signatures', associated with specific cancers

Whole genome analysis of more than 12,000 tumors has identified new patterns of mutations associated with specific cancers. These combinations generate specific mutational signatures, the study of which provides information on environmental factors causing the mutations. The work is published in Science.

Reaction to the cases of childhood hepatitis of unknown origin detected in Spain

This week the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) has warned of an increase in cases of hepatitis of unknown origin in children in the UK. Three cases have been diagnosed in Ciudad Real, Madrid and Aragon, one of which required a liver transplant. With the current information it is difficult to establish the cause.
