Reactions to clinical trial using CRISPR to modify patient's own T lymphocytes for cancer treatment

A pioneering phase 1 clinical trial has tested a type of cancer immunotherapy. Researchers have modified patients' own T-lymphocyte receptors using the CRISPR tool to direct them against specific targets on their own tumours. The results are published in the journal Nature.

Reaction to the study finding prion forms in the brains of people with dementia and Down syndrome

People with Down syndrome are at high risk of developing dementia very similar to that caused by Alzheimer's disease. A study published in the journal PNAS has found that in these people, as had been observed in "classic" Alzheimer's, the characteristic proteins of the disease have prion-like features.

Reaction to study linking processed food consumption to 57,000 premature deaths in Brazil

Research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine has modelled the impact of ultra-processed food consumption on premature and preventable deaths in Brazil in 2019. According to the research, increased intake of these foods was associated with more than 10% of premature deaths in Brazil in 2019, representing about 57,000 deaths.

Reactions to the discovery of high-energy neutrinos emitted by an active galaxy

For the first time, the IceCube collaboration team has found evidence for high-energy neutrino emission from NGC 1068, an active galaxy 47 million light-years away with a supermassive black hole. The finding, made with the detector located under the Antarctic ice sheet, is published in the journal Science.
